Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir declared Sunday that the “yellow line” inside the Gaza Strip now serves as a new border, marking areas where troops remain deployed under ceasefire arrangements that launched Oct. 10.
During a visit to Beit Hanoun and Jabaliya, Zamir notified commanders the line acts as a forward defensive zone and an area of operational activity. He declared the military has assumed control over extensive parts of Gaza and will stay in place to prevent Hamas from regrouping.
Zamir declared forces are preparing for surprise attack scenarios as part of a new multi-year plan. He added the mission will not be complete until the body of police officer Ran Gvili, the last deceased hostage in Gaza, is recovered. Hamas has released all 20 remaining living hostages and the bodies of 27 others.
Israeli troops have shot and killed dozens of Palestinians they declared crossed the “yellow line.” Gaza health authorities report more than 370 people have been killed by Israeli fire since Oct. 11, bringing the Palestinian death toll in the conflict to 70,360.
