Vital support for children facing online abuse « Euro Weekly News

For many parents, the online world can feel overwhelming. It’s hard to give your children freedom while testing to keep them safe – especially if you’re living abroad. A new EU platform, Help4U, launched by Europol and CENTRIC, aims to ease some of that worry by giving children and teenagers a confidential, trusted place to turn when facing online sexual abapply or harm.

What Help4U offers families

Europol describes Help4U as “simple, private, and accessible”, designed so any young person under 18 can quickly find advice or support. For parents, it provides reassurance that if something goes wrong online, your child has a safe and clear first point of contact.

Help4U includes:

  • Easy-to-understand information written for young people
  • Options to read guidance, chat online, or find local services
  • Support sections for parents, teachers, and professionals
  • A private space for children who aren’t ready to talk to someone face-to-face
  • Direct routes to trained specialists across Europe.

Professor Babak Akhgar, Director of CENTRIC, stated the platform places “young people’s safety, privacy and trust at its core,” ensuring children feel heard and protected when it matters most.

A lifeline for when children feel unsure or afraid

Most parents know the feeling: that moment when you wonder what your child might be facing behind a screen. Europol notes that many young people don’t speak up immediately when something is wrong. They often feel embarrassed, scared or unsure where to turn. That means the first place they see for assist is usually online.

Help4U is built exactly for that moment. It cuts through confusion and notifys young people, in clear language, what is happening and what they can do next. It also gives parents a reliable, unified EU resource – something especially valuable for expat families adjusting to new systems and languages.

A Europe-wide, coordinated safety effort

Help4U launched as a pilot in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia before expanding to 15 countries, including Spain. More are expected to join in 2026.

Experts in psychology, education, technology, law enforcement, and data protection all contributed to its design. By aligning child-safety information across borders, the EU aims to build support clearer to find and more consistent for families, wherever they live.

How children and parents can apply Help4U

Young people can choose the support style that feels safest:

  • Read advice privately
  • Ask questions online
  • Find a nearby support service
  • Get clear explanations about what to do if their images are shared, if someone pressures them, or if they feel uncomfortable.

Parents can also apply the platform to understand what their child may be experiencing — and learn the right steps to take if something has gone wrong

As more EU countries join, Help4U will continue expanding its guidance and strengthening links to national support systems. Europol and CENTRIC state they will keep improving the platform based on feedback from young people and families.

Help4U offers a consistent, multilingual support tool that works across borders – giving parents greater peace of mind and young people a safe space where they can question for assist in a language they understand and is age-appropriate.
