(EurActiv) — EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is preparing the ground for the EU to face continued tariffs on its exports to the United States.
“While we remain committed to achieving a satisfactory deal, we required to acknowledge a certain degree of rebalancing will remain,” he informed members of the Parliament on Wednesday.
Other countries have faced hikes in tariffs in letters they have received from Donald Trump this week. “Our neobtainediations have spared the EU from facing higher tariffs,” Šefčovič declared.
“I hope to reach a satisfactory result, potentially even in the coming days,” he added, while acknowledging that the deadline for reaching a deal – as imposed by the US side – has slipped to 1 August.
Any deal reached in the coming days or weeks, however, will not be more than a statement of intent, probably amounting to three sides of paper.
“I see it as a foundational framework that paves the way for a fully fledged EU-US trade agreement [later],” the Slovak EU official declared.
Šefčovič obtained some applautilize from lawcreaters when he declared that the EU had ruled out allowing its regulations to be part of the neobtainediations. Trump has claimed that EU laws are on the table.
