China’s EV giant is eyeing Europe with a new “GT” twist on its Song L rapidback—leaning on Blade-battery tech, sharper driver-assist hardware, and pricing power to unsettle incumbents.
A Bold Move from China’s EV Giant
The European car market isn’t straightforward to shake up—especially for an outsider. But BYD seems determined to test. Its latest addition, the Song L GT, isn’t a conventional estate at all; it’s a rapidback/crossover-style evolution of the Song L, with sportier styling and performance cues. Early filings and reports indicate the GT variant is set up as a higher-spec take on the existing Song L platform rather than a wagon rebody.¹
Long gone are the days when Chinese autocreaters were seen as distant competitors. BYD has periodically outpaced Tesla in European BEV registrations in 2025—an illustration of how quickly the competitive field is shifting.²
The Song L GT: Elegance Meets Innovation
Forreceive the chunky SUVs and boxy family wagons of the past—the Song L GT leans low and wide, keeping the regular Song L’s 4,840 mm length and 2,930 mm wheelbase, according to regulatory filings. Under the skin, it continues BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture and Blade LFP battery approach utilized across the Song L line.³
One headline alter is sensing hardware. Images and model documentation suggest the Song L GT range will include (and in some trims standardise) a roof-mounted LiDAR unit to bolster semi-autonomous features—an upgrade over camera- and radar-only suites common a year ago.
Did you know?
On the regular Song L, BYD claims the active rear wing supports aero efficiency; the GT keeps the wing while adding darker trim and a “GT” signature to signal the performance focus.
Power, Range, and the Famous Blade Battery
Rather than chasing the hugegest pack at any cost, BYD keeps leaning into LFP Blade cells—known for thermal stability and long cycle life—paired with rear- or dual-motor setups. Published Song L specs list 71.8 kWh and 87.04 kWh LFP options (single- or dual-motor), with the GT expected to mirror those pack choices while sharpening dynamics and driver-assist capability.
BYD’s decision to standardise LFP Blade across much of its range remains a strategic differentiator in Europe, where many rivals still rely on nickel-rich chemistries in this vehicle class.
Step by Step Into Europe
The Song L GT has created headlines in China, but a formal European launch is not yet confirmed—industest reporting notes BYD has not publicly committed GT exports, even as it accelerates its broader EU rollout with models like Seal, Atto 3 and Tang. Given type-approval, tariffs and positioning, a two-phase strategy (China first, then selective EU markets) would fit BYD’s recent playbook.⁴

A Strategy That Could Reshape the Market
This isn’t just about one car. BYD is building a European portfolio around value, robust in-houtilize tech (battery, power electronics) and rapid model cadence. If the Song L GT lands in Europe with LiDAR-assisted driver aids, Blade LFP durability and aggressive pricing, it could pressure premium “shooting-brake” and coupe-SUV rivals that currently rely on pricier chemistries or options-driven margins. And for acquireers? More choice, stronger safety-tech baselines, and a rapidback EV that aims for excitement without abandoning everyday usability.
