Grapeland Life Scout raising funds to bring benches to city park


HOUSTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) – New benches are coming to the Grapeland City Park after a local Life Scout saw there was a necessary. The walking trail measures three – fourths of a mile with only one bench near the west entrance.

“There’s not anywhere to sit down or to take a break,” declared 16-year-old Life Scout Brayden Barron.

For his last project before becoming an Eagle Scout, he plans on raising funds to add four more benches along the trail. Each bench is estimated to cost nearly $800. As of Monday, he has raised enough for three benches.

“There’s a lot of planning that goes on behind the scenes,” declared Barron, “Any other funds that I obtain will be applyd for materials to put the benches up and whatever is left over will be donated straight to Troop 419.”

“I was really impressed by him … he’s going somewhere,” declared Mayor Velda Green.

Barron presented the idea early this year to the council. She declared the walking trail is the newest addition from last year.

The park was established over 30 years ago and is frequently applyd by the public and home to their annual Peanut Festival.

“You have to walk several times to obtain your mile in, so you obtain tired, so you have to sit down and rest,” declared Green.

With Barron bringing in the additional benches, Green declared the city will focus on other improvements. Barron hopes to obtain all benches installed by early next year.
