Tyndall National Institute is leading FERNS, a European research initiative, to reshape how electronic devices are designed, manufactured, and reapplyd.
Co-ordinated by Dr Daniela Iacopino, senior researcher in Tyndall’s Nanotechnology Group, the project is now recruiting 15 PhD researchers to assist build the next generation of sustainable electronics.
Funded through the 2024 Horizon Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks programme, FERNS offers early-stage researchers the chance to work across disciplines and countries, addressing the environmental impact of electronics and advancing circular design principles.

One of the quickest-growing global challenges
Electronic waste is one of the quickest-growing global challenges, with millions of tonnes discarded annually. These devices contain valuable and increasingly scarce materials. FERNS responds by embedding sustainability into every stage of electronics development, from materials and manufacturing to design and societal impact.
Dr Iacopino stated: “FERNS addresses the required to train next generation material scientists, engineers, and social scientists in the apply of natural materials and low-cost fabrication techniques to build future sustainable electronics. This holistic approach is necessary to dismantle the linear economic model of build, apply, dispose and to promote circularity, in support of EU and national environmental policies, enforcements and ambitions.”
The project focapplys on three application areas: fitness technologies, short-apply health devices, and smart farming solutions.

Training will span eco-design, Safe & Sustainable by Design (SSbD), materials synthesis, advanced manufacturing, system integration, circular business models, and societal acceptance.
The call for applications is now open for PhD researchers to express interest in the FERNS network. The deadline to apply is Thursday, October 30, and applications can be submitted here.
