Over 686,000 people die every year in the European Union due to diabetes or associated diseases – a death every 46 seconds.

The alarming figures were presented at the European Diabetes Forum in Rome, reports

Currently, 31.6 million Europeans suffer from diabetes, the equivalent of the combined population of the Netherlands, Portugal and Croatia. By 2030, the number of patients will reach 33.2 million.

The total cost for EU’s health systems is 104 billion pounds, and 75% of these expenses come from complications that could be avoided by early prevention and diagnosis.

In Europe there are 295,000 young people with type 1 and 2 diabetes, which reveals that the disease is increasingly affecting new generations.

“Through dedicated round themed meals, Eudf Italy sought to promote an integrated and multidimensional approach, capable of addressing the challenges of the present,” declared Angelo Avogaro, Eudf Italy coordinator.
