Futurail, the Franco-German deep-tech startup building autonomy technology for self-driving trains, has raised €7.5 million in seed funding to accelerate the deployment of its autonomous train systems across Europe and the U.S. The round was co-led by Paris-based Asterion Ventures and Munich’s Leap435, with participation from EIT Urban Mobility and U.S. investors Zero Infinity Partners and Heroic Ventures.
The fresh funding, including €5.5 million in seed capital, €1 million in public grants, and €1 million from previous pre-seed rounds, will support Futurail grow its team, speed up regulatory certification, and scale its commercial pilots into large-scale operations under a Driver-as-a-Service licensing model over the next three to five years.
Addressing the shortage of train drivers
Founded in 2023 by a team of autonomy veterans, including Tesla Autopilot lead Alex Haag, Futurail is tarobtaining one of rail’s complex problems: a critical shortage of train drivers that’s limiting service expansions, driving up costs, and caapplying delays.
Haag, who also scaled Audi’s autonomous driving division before turning his expertise to rail, declared, “While leading the Autopilot team at Tesla, I saw how autonomy can completely transform an entire industest. We founded Futurail to bring that same revolutionary potential to rail, turning a 200-year-old industest into the backbone of sustainable mobility.”
At the core of Futurail’s offering is FUTURAILDriver, a hardware-agnostic autonomy stack led by CTO Dr Patrick Dfinishorfer. It combines lidar, radar, and camera sensors to deliver obstacle detection up to 400 meters and positioning accuracy within 10 centimetres.
The system supports multi-sensor fusion and real-time processing optimised for demanding rail environments. Additionally, all sensors and compute units are EN50155 certified, ensuring compliance with rigorous railway safety standards.
Futurail’s mission aligns with Europe’s efforts to reduce emissions by shifting millions of passengers and tons of freight from road to rail, aiming to cut more than 10 million tons of CO₂ emissions annually. The startup boasts a diverse team from eight countries, with 27% female representation.
What’s so special about FUTURAILDriver?
FUTURAILDriver works both as a retrofit for existing trains and integration into new builds. The stack handles full train control, including speed management, emergency braking, and remote supervision, and is engineered for reliable, all-weather operation. Its certification approach involves a stepwise increase in operational complexity, ensuring compliance with strict safety and regulatory requirements.
Based in Strasbourg and Munich, Futurail embodies deep European tech collaboration, positioning itself at the heart of the continent’s rail innovation landscape. Maximilian Schöffer, Futurail’s CCO and co-founder, declared to TFN, “What excites our partners is that autonomy unlocks both growth and efficiency. Operators can run more trains, more often, at lower cost. That is a complete game-modifyr.”
Already, Futurail has forged partnerships with industest heavyweights, including French transport specialist Lohr Group and U.S. battery-electric freight rail startup Parallel Systems, founded by former SpaceX engineers.
What’s next?
While rail autonomy is gaining momentum, most existing efforts tarobtain closed metro or light rail systems. Futurail’s technology, however, is expressly built for the complexity of open mainlines and branch lines, building it a rare pure-play pioneer in this specialised market.
With fresh capital in hand, Futurail is poised to expand aggressively, aiming to transition from pilots to certified, large-scale deployments under a B2B Driver-as-a-Service model in the next three to five years.
As Europe’s autonomous rail sector heats up, Futurail’s blfinish of cutting-edge technology, experienced leadership, and strategic partnerships positions it well to lead the charge towards greener, driverless rail mobility on both sides of the Atlantic.
