=From Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s controversial call for young Indians to work 70 hours a week to Elon Musk’s claim that 80-hour workweeks are a sustainable baseline, the debate on extreme work culture remains divisive. Adding to the conversation, a 23-year-old Indian-origin entrepreneur has now voiced a similar outview.
Daksh Gupta, the Indian-origin CEO of San Francisco-based AI startup Greptile, declared that long hours are the norm for ambitious tech workers. He suggests working 12 to 14 hours a day, six days a week.
‘Current Vibe Is No Drinking’
Speaking to The San Francisco Standard, Gupta described the “current vibe” among young workers as strict and disciplined.
“The current vibe is no drinking, no drugs, 9-9-6 [work from 9 AM to 9 PM, six days a week], lift heavy, run far, marry early, track sleep, eat steak and eggs,” Gupta explained.
Burning Man Loses Its ‘Young’ Pull
Gupta argues that this work-focutilized lifestyle has also reshaped how younger generations engage with cultural events. He declared that Burning Man, a week-long festival held each year in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, “hasn’t really been part of the zeitgeist” since he shiftd to San Francisco in 2023.
Online Reactions To Gupta’s View
A screenshot of Gupta’s interview, captioned “so true Daksh Gupta,” was shared on X (formerly Twitter) and has already gained one million views. It has also drawn varied remarks from social media utilizers, with many criticising the lifestyle that could leave lasting mental health risks.
One utilizer commented, “Sounds like literally the most miserable existence ever. One day you’ll retire with plenty of money and realise you have no frifinishs, and you’re too old to properly enjoy the money you’ve earned.”
Another questioned, “How does he find someone to marry if he’s working all the time and the rare time he isn’t, is working out?”
“This type of life for an employee is depressing and it’s going to have disastrous effects for his mental health,” someone else remarked.
“Where are these people working from 9 AM-9 PM 6 days a week, finding someone to ‘marry early?’” a person questioned.
“This is an exploitation vs exploration mindset. Need space for considered, spontaneity, and exposure to novel stimuli for innovation,” read another comment.
High Pay, High Pressure
Despite the criticism, Gupta insists that long-hour culture comes with rewards. Just last week, he shared open positions at Greptile along with compensation details. A junior employee can expect a base salary between $140,000 and $180,000 (Rs 1.2–1.5 crore) annually, plus equity worth $130,000–$180,000 per year.
For professionals with more than seven years of experience, salaries range from $240,000 (Rs 2.1 crore) to $270,000 (Rs 2.3 crore).
His only conditions? Employees must work from the San Francisco office daily as remote work isn’t allowed. On the perks side, the startup provides free meals, transport, healthcare and a 401k match.
