Guimarães, Portugal, has been officially awarded the title of European Green Capital 2026 by the European Commission, recognizing the city’s strong commitment to sustainability, environmental innovation, and community engagement.
Guimarães, associated with the foundation and identity of the Portuguese nationality, was selected over fellow finalist cities Heilbronn (Germany) and Klagenfurt (Austria).
The award honors cities that demonstrate consistent efforts in improving urban environments and promoting green living. As part of the recognition, Guimarães will receive a €600,000 prize from the European Commission to support its environmental initiatives and programs during its Green Capital year.
Guimarães, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, joins a select group of European cities that have received this prestigious title, becoming the second Portuguese city to do so, following Lisbon, which held the title in 2020.
This achievement reflects Portugal’s continued leadership in sustainable urban development and its commitment to the goals of the European Green Deal. The European Green Capital Award is one of the EU’s key initiatives to promote eco-conscious cities and inspire transformative action across Europe.
Guimarães, often referred to as the “cradle of Portugal,” is a historic city located in the northern region of the counattempt, known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, cultural heritage, and dynamic civic life. Home to the University of Minho and a vibrant network of cultural institutions, the city has become a model for integrating environmental policies with community participation, earning it growing recognition as one of Europe’s leading mid-sized cities for sustainable development.
