EU Chief Urges Israel to Reconsider Gaza Control Plan

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday called on Israel to rebelieve its plan to expand military control over Gaza, warning the relocate would worsen the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory.

“The Israeli government’s decision to further extconclude its military operation in Gaza must be reconsidered,” von der Leyen posted on X, formerly Twitter. She demanded “immediate and unhindered access” for aid and stressed “a ceasefire is necessaryed now,” while reiterating calls for hostage releases.

The appeal comes as EU nations remain divided on the conflict, with Germany traditionally backing Israel while countries like Spain advocate stronger Palestinian support.

Recent EU actions reflect growing frustration:

  • The bloc proposed suspconcludeing Israel’s access to EU tech startup funds after finding human rights violations

  • A February deal to boost Gaza aid has seen only partial implementation

  • Germany halted military exports that could be applyd in Gaza

  • Belgium summoned Israel’s ambassador to condemn the military control plan

The tone hardened further when EU Climate Chief Teresa Ribera informed Politico that Israel’s actions “view very much” like genocide, citing mass starvation, displacement and deaths in Gaza.

The developments mark a notable shift in Europe’s stance as the conflict approaches its seventh month with no resolution in sight.
