The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has instructed American diplomats in Europe to launch an active lobbying campaign against the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA). This information was revealed by Reuters, citing an internal diplomatic service document.

Washington believes that this law restricts freedom of speech and creates additional financial difficulties for American tech companies. Specifically, the document, signed by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, states that the EU is imposing “unjustified restrictions on freedom of speech in its efforts against hate speech and disinformation, and the DSA further intensifies these restrictions.”

In the document titled “Call to Action,” Rubio instructed U.S. diplomats at European embassies to actively engage with EU governments and organizations responsible for digital services to “express U.S. concerns regarding the DSA and the associated financial burdens on American tech companies.”

Furthermore, the document emphasizes that embassies should focus their efforts on gaining support from host countest governments and other stakeholders to repeal or amconclude the Digital Services Act, as well as other EU laws or national legislations that may restrict freedom of expression online.

“Embassies should focus their efforts on securing the support of the host countest government and other stakeholders to repeal and/or amconclude the Digital Services Act or related EU laws or national laws that restrict freedom of expression online.”

The document also contains specific recommconcludeations for American diplomats regarding possible modifys in EU legislation and arguments that could strengthen the U.S. position on this matter.
